Employment Law Internship Ideas
Are you a #lawstudent looking to specialize in #employmentlaw?
Or perhaps you are a lawyer looking to transition to employment law? Here are some ways you can gain employment law experience.
Employment law has many different subsets, so it helps to know how you want to spend your days. Here are some examples:
Plaintiff's side employment: Volunteer for a legal aid office representing indigent employees.
Employer's side/management defense: Many law schools allow students to earn credit and intern with law firms. You could also seek out opportunities with insurance companies and law firms for insurance defense work, since many of these cases involve employment claims.
Labor law: Seek internship opportunities with labor organizations. The one I am most familiar with is the American Federation of Teachers, but there are many. This is a rabbit hole of information so it helps to know what industry you are seeking experience in. Also, the American Arbitration Association (AAA) has great labor law seminars for continuing legal education that may be available to law students.
Also, never discount the power of working on pro bono cases. That is the best way to get legal experience quickly if you are a green attorney.
