All About LinkedIn Groups
Anyone can create a LinkedIn Group.
I’ve created two for my consulting brand, Law Practice Queen. Here are the lessons I’ve learned with the groups and how you can use them to help your network.
What Do Groups Do?
A group creates a micro-community and curated feed for your network. It allows startups + thought leaders a great way to serve their network.
What Are the Benefits of Groups vs Regular LinkedIn?
Exclusive Membership.
As a group admin, you control entry to the group. It allows you to curate a community of members who can get the most help from your message. For example, my groups are only accessible to female attorneys and law students, because my brand, Law Practice Queen, primarily advocates for females in the legal profession.
If you are interested in joining Law Practice Queen groups (note: these are exclusive to female attorneys + law students), check them out here:

Feedback + Data.
While LI has a general poll feature, I feel more comfortable using it within a group. Poll your group to see what type of content is helpful, what problems they are facing, and how you can help them.
Recommend Feature.
You can recommend posts in your group. The group settings allow the admin to “recommend” a post to the group members every 7 days. This will keep busy members engaged in the group.
What I've Learned from Running LinkedIn Groups
Create group rules.
This informs your members what types of posts are allowed.
Delete posts that violate the group rules.
One of my big rules is no spam. You can’t use my group to post stuff about your own business. That can go on your own page. If you aren’t diligent about deleting spam posts, you are doing a disservice to your group members that come there for specific content.
Avoid re-posts.
Draft original content and create events specific to your group.
Avoid spam.
You can post your offerings, but go with a 5 to 1 ratio for these, at a minimum (5 informational/knowledge posts for every 1 post about your offerings).
Law Practice Queen is launching a membership community on April 7. Learn more about the membership here.
