What I’ve Learned as a Law Firm Owner – Part 1

Most clients do not read your retainer contract.

This means that you need to explain your payment terms to them verbally to make sure they are clear.

Don’t just rely on the contract.

Law school teaches you that this is good enough because it’s a legally binding contract.

What law school doesn’t teach you is human behavior.

Most people do not read long documents. It takes too much energy. (My contract is 2.5 pages long, with a cover letter, so it's a 4 page document).

Make things easy for your clients.

Explaining your contract verbally and coming up with written budgets takes more time, but it will create a meeting of the minds, understanding, and will increase the profitability of your firm.

This doesn’t just apply to law firm owners.

This applies to any lawyer that works with clients.

Make sure the payment terms and budget are crystal clear so that there’s less disputes over your bills on the back end.
