The Easiest Way to Help Women

Speak up.

Several years ago, I sat on an interview panel at a law firm, and we were interviewing internship candidates. Law students. Bright and cheery eyed, and full of nerves. After one promising interview of a female intern candidate, one of my male colleagues immediately made a joke about how we should hire her because "she's hot," and how that would be helpful to him in the workplace.

I froze. My heart was beating out of my chest. I looked urgently at my other colleagues - all male.

One of my male colleagues immediately spoke up against it. I'll never forget that moment - and how supported I felt.

After he spoke against the "joke," another male colleague echoed the sentiment that it was not appropriate to talk like that, and shut it down.

Words. They are just words, but they mean more than that.

They mean culture.

They mean safety.

They mean a future for women.

When you see something that's not right, say something. Please, use your voice. Because for whatever reason, we can't always use ours.
