Should Biglaw Lawyers Unionize?
🤔 SHOULD BIGLAW LAWYERS UNIONIZE? ⬇️⬇️⬇️
By now, most of us have seen the atrocious Paul Hastings slide.
For those that haven't, I linked my previous post in the comments so you can see it.
It lays out, among other condescending and unprofessional "non-negotiable expectations," that attorneys must be available to work "24/7."
Paul Hastings has insisted publicly that the slide is the act of a rogue senior associate.
They may just wait for the viral storm to pass, and then go back to their usual ways.
There are other Biglaw lawyers that will continue to be subject to "24/7" availability demands, and the profession will continue to suffer from high burnout, depression, anxiety, and other mental health crises.
💪What can be done to bring real change to Biglaw and the legal industry as a whole to improve lawyers' health, well being, and work life balance?
⚖️In all other industries, labor unions have formed to push back against impossible and toxic workplace expectations.
I would encourage Biglaw associates to check out unionization if they are interested in fighting back.
The first step is to ensure you are not considered a "supervisor" under the statutory definition of the National Labor Relations Act.
The second step is to link up with someone who has successfully unionized a similar workplace.
I've linked two articles in the comments that discuss unionization in the legal industry, along with a union that represents lawyers.
