These are the two rules that we instilled in my daughter as parents.

There are many rules that apply to our world, but fairness is not one of them.

Fairness is a primary complaint I hear when employees are fired from their jobs.

"It's just not fair."

"I wasn't treated fairly."

Employment law isn't governed by a fairness standard.

Employment law is governed by an illegality standard.

Did the employer's actions violate an applicable law?

And if it did, does the employer have a viable defense?
