Law Mom Horror Stories Part 1
She said I was leaving my child with a stranger and laughed in my face.
This is what opposing counsel said to me when I got back from maternity leave.
I was a first time mom and had all the feelings associated with leaving my child at daycare.
We couldn’t get my daughter to take a bottle, but the infant room teacher finally did it by dropping milk into her mouth with a dropper.
I wasn’t sleeping much.
I was back in the office and managing the ticking time bomb that is pumping at work.
When opposing counsel asked who was watching my child, I said she was at daycare.
She said, “Haha, she’s leaving her daughter with strangers…” and cackled in my face.
She talked about me in the third person like I wasn’t even sitting right in front of her.
Her comment didn’t even hurt me.
I knew my child was in good hands.
I saw her infant room teacher feed two babies at once and rock another baby to sleep with her foot.
I saw her infant room teacher walk 6 babies in a huge stroller at once, all sleeping peacefully.
I was pissed at opposing counsel for calling my child's teacher a "stranger," and then I just ignored her.
Opposing counsel can say the most insensitive things to try to get under your skin.
The trick is to not take things personally.
The words and actions of opposing counsel have nothing to do with you.
They have everything to do with opposing counsel.
Don’t take things personally, and it will help you in the practice of law, and in life.
