Supporting Parents

Career growth is not usually linear, although we have expectations that it should be. We think that we will get a degree, then an internship, then an entry level job, work our way up, and get our reward.

But careers take twists and turns. Some of us moms and dads prioritize our little ones and focus less on work.

When we do that, the working world, particularly the legal world where I’m at, views you as invisible. They think, oh, she’s gone off to be a mom, and now she’s off the partner track.

What they don’t realize is that parenthood can light a fire under you to get things done at work.

Gone are the days of going out late to the bar, grabbing McDonalds drive through on the way home, and showing up hungover to work (hopefully, because hangovers are the absolute worst).

Those days have been replaced by prioritizing and relishing every second of sleep and family time you can muster. And also prioritizing your job, because you have bills to pay.

Many of us are working off one income. We can’t afford to fail.
If you are taking time to focus on family, don’t let others’ comments get in the way of your goals.

People will make assumptions about you as a mother. A father. A parent.

But no one else knows the mission inside your heart but you.

Accomplish your dreams.

And let no one stand in your way.
